Where to Start With Herman Bavinck: A Reformed Reader’s Guide

Some theologians you read for a single doctrine. Herman Bavinck you read for a whole way of seeing.

The newest Reformed Reader’s Guide is devoted to Bavinck, the Dutch theologian whose Reformed Dogmatics is one of the most important works many English readers have never opened. The guide covers his life, the heart of his thought (grace restores nature, it does not destroy it), and where to begin if four volumes feel daunting.

We wrote this for the reader who keeps hearing Bavinck’s name but isn’t sure where to start. He can seem intimidating from a distance but he turns out to be remarkably warm up close, and our hope is that this guide closes that gap. If it sends even a few of you to the Dogmatics itself, it will have done its work.

Inside the guide

  • Who Herman Bavinck was and why he still matters
  • “Grace restores nature”: the heart of his theology
  • A tour of the four-volume Reformed Dogmatics
  • Where to start reading Bavinck for the first time

It’s about a thirty-minute read.
