J. Gresham Machen was born on July 28, 1881. To mark his 145th birthday, we’ve published a new Reformed Reader’s Guide tracing the life, books, battles, and final hope of one of American Presbyterianism’s clearest voices.
Machen saw that liberalism could keep Christianity’s vocabulary while emptying it of Christianity’s message. That conviction cost him Princeton, his denomination, and his ministerial standing. It also led to Westminster Theological Seminary and the Orthodox Presbyterian Church.
The guide follows him from Baltimore and Marburg to Princeton, Westminster, and the Bismarck hospital bed where he sent his last telegram: “So thankful for active obedience of Christ. No hope without it.”
